The
Pierre Fauchard Academy is a service organisation of dentists whose members are
selected for their dedication to the art and science of dentistry, and for their
contribution to its professional literature. They will readily undertake to aid
all members of the profession, wherever and whenever possible, in the solution
of scientific, technical and economic problems. Further they are encouraged to
continue contributing to the dental literature and to assist in establishing and
maintaining a high plane of competence in professional publications. Above all,
they practice with self-restraint and recognized ideals, exemplified by the
"Golden rule" placing the welfare of patients above personal aims and
desires.
Objectives
1. To elevate the character, education and professional
ability of the greatest number of dental surgeons by making available to them
dental literature, presenting the latest developments and opinions in dentistry.
2. To encourage practitioners to contribute to the literature.
3. To encourage through annual awards, outstanding contributors to the science
and art of dentistry and service to the profession or to the Society in general.
4. To establish personal contacts between leaders in the profession and those
who seek advice on technical or economic subjects.
5. To encourage Dental Student and foster advancement of their scientific and
professional standards.

HISTORY
INTERNATIONAL
The
Pierre Fauchard Academy was founded in 1936 as an International Honour Dental
Organisation by Dr. Elmer S. Best, a Minneapolis dentist.
In founding the Academy, Dr. Best and his colleagues adopted the name of Pierre
Fauchard, a Parisian Chirurgien Dentiste who published his monumental work, Le
Chirurgein Dentiste au Traite des Dents in 1728. It became the first
widely accepted scientifically oriented book on Dentistry. The two volumes
are credited with raising dentistry to the status of a profession. Deservedly,
Pierre Fauchard has been described as the "Father of Modern
Dentistry".

HISTORY
INDIA SECTION

Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA) in India was started in
the year 1976 but became non-functional in 1978 and was closed. However, during
the Golden Jubilee of PFA in 1986, the International office appointed Dr. T.
Samraj as Chairman and gave him powers to revive the India Section. A meeting of
existing members and those who were interested to revive PFA in India was held
in December 1986 at Coimbatore. The members ratified the action of the
International PFA appointing Dr. T. Samraj as Chairman and elected him also as
Secretary and Treasurer for 5 years and authorized him to co-ordinate all the
activities of PFA in India. They also elected Dr. V.P. Jalili as Editor of the
Journal of PFA (JPFA) and Dr. S.S. Sidhu as Scientific Editor of JPFA. The India
Section was recognized in 1988 by the International PFA,
After 5 years in 1991, Dr. S.S. Sidhu was elected as Chairman of PFA for 1 year
in 1992, Dr. T. Samraj as Secretary and Treasurer for another 5 years and Dr.
V.P. Jalili as Editor of JPFA for another 5 years. Dr. S.S. Sidhu served 29
years as Scientific Editor of JPFA till 2015 and Dr. V.P. Jalili as Chief Editor
of JPFA for 30 years till 2016 and is now the Emeritus Editor of JPFA from 2017.
Dr. O.P. Kharbanda was elected as Chief Editor of JPFA from 2017 for 5 years and
Dr. T. Samraj as Secretary and Treasurer for another 5 years. Dr. T. Samraj
served as Secretary and Treasurer for 35 years till 2021 and is now the Emeritus
Secretary of PFA from 2022. Dr. J. Sabarinathan was elected as Secretary for 5
years from 2022, Dr. O.P. Kharbanda as Chief Editor of JPFA for another 5 years
and Dr. S. Sabitha as Treasurer for 5 years. Dr. Maya Ramesh was elected as
Secretary for 3 years to complete the term of Dr. Sabarinathan and Dr. J. Arun
Kumar was elected as Treasurer to complete the term of Dr. S. Sabitha.

MANAGEMENT
INTERNATIONAL
The Pierre Fauchard Academy was originally incorporated
in the state of Minnesota (residence of founder Elmer S. Best) in 1936 and
reincorporated in Illinois in August 1995. It’s Constitution and Bylaws
specify that it should be a non-profit educational organization whose assets are
protected. Operation of the organization is vested in a Board of Trustees
including the officers (elected annually for one-year terms) and (currently) ten
Trustees who serve terms of four years. The Trustees represent geographic
areas of the United States and the rest of the world. Subdivision is
accomplished through individual state organizations and, in the case of foreign
entities, sections in different countries under the guidance of regional
Trustees.
The officers include the President, President-Elect, Immediate Past President,
Vice President, Treasurer and Executive Director, all of whom serve with the
eleven Trustees to form the Board of Trustees.
State Chairpersons or Section Chairs (outside the United States) are charged
with the responsibility of overseeing their own areas, nominating new Fellows,
arranging meeting functions and public relations.
PFA has grown internationally to nearly 7,000 members organized into 11 global
Regions and over 142 local Sections. The United States has 55 Sections with and
another 87 Sections in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and
Australia.

MANAGEMENT
INDIA SECTION
The India Section is managed by the Senate of PFA
consisting of 16 Fellows, namely, the Chairman, Secretary, Emeritus Secretary,
Chief Editor, Emeritus Editor, Treasurer, 4 Vice-Chairmen (VC) 1, 2, 3, and 4
from North, South, West and East regions, one Joint Secretary, one Deputy
Secretary and Four Assistant Secretaries, representing each region.
The Secretary shall be responsible for the management of the PFA India Section
Office, assisted by Joint Secretary. The Chairman will be assisted by the Deputy
Secretary. The Chief Editor is responsible for the publication of JPFA and the
Treasurer is responsible for the maintenance of Accounts. The Vice-Chairmen and
Assistant Secretaries are charged with the responsibility of overseeing their
areas, nominating new Fellows, and arranging CDE meetings, functions, and public
relations.
The India Section has 1236 Fellows and 245 International Fellows in its
rolls as of January2026.
The India Section is registered under the Societies Act at Vellore with
Registration No: 39 / 89.

Fellowship is by invitation only and limited to ethical dentists.
Fellowship is through India Section only. No direct International Fellowship is permitted.
INDIA SECTION
Fellowship is by invitation only and limited to ethical dentists. Each nomination for Fellowship must bear the endorsement of the Section Secretary / Chairperson. The minimum requirement for Fellowship in the India Section is a minimum of 5 years’ experience after BDS (From 2025). Primary membership in the Indian Dental Association is essential.

PUBLICATIONS
INTERNATIONAL
Dental
World, which replaced a newsletter in 1980, is the current periodical issued by
the Academy. This bi-monthly publication appears inside the scientific
journal Dental Abstracts. Dental World covers the programs and activities
of the International Academy, its Officers and Fellows, and provides meeting
reports for Sections and Foundation news.

was started in 1986, the first year of formation of the India Section. The

INTERNATIONAL
The Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy was established in 1986.
1. The annual grants program receives applications for dental projects in a number of dental service areas from all over the world.
2. The Student Scholarship Program makes presentations to dental students from all over the world.
